Wells College was founded in Aurora, NY by Henry Wells, founder of American Express, to promote education in literature, science, and the arts. It graduated many generations of students who went on to successful careers in various fields. The college opened its doors to students of all genders in 2004. However, due to financial challenges exacerbated by national trends in higher education, it closed permanently in June 2024. Its legacy institution is Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
