Mahatma Gandhi University was established in Nalgonda, a town located 90 km from Hyderabad, by the Government of Andhra Pradesh to promote academic excellence and develop human resources with changing times. It was renamed as Mahatma Gandhi University by the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 1991.
