Summer Academy of Applied Sciences

About this program

Two-week program held at the University Centre of Westfjords. Participants attended academic seminars, workshops, and self-driven projects related to the local environment and society in Westfjords. Topics included economic impact of technological change, self-governance and entrepreneurship, and current trends in management and leadership. Students from Ísafjörður and around the region participated in workshops and company visits. In Bolungarvík, the group visited the fishing company Jakobs Valgeir, where they met with employees and leaders. At Ósvör museum, students learned about old Icelandic vessels from the 19th century, how fishing was conducted for over 200 years. During the program, Ketil Berg Magnússon, a keynote speaker, took students on a tour of the biotechnology company Kerecis and closed the summer academy at Blábanki in Þingeyri, where the program was celebrated with a small ceremony and a boat trip. FOM University of Applied Sciences is a German university that focuses on academic programs relevant to the job market and higher education institutions. The school has more than 10,000 collaborations with companies, municipalities, and associations and employs approximately 1,500 staff members with diverse expertise. The summer academy in Iceland offers unique academic opportunities in the heart of one of the largest natural areas in Westfjords, where academic excellence, international cooperation, and strong community ties converge.
